The experience of TFP is that these national conferences workshops not only impart training and provide latest medical techniques for better management of Thalassaemics of Pakistan but it is also a tremendous source of advocacy of Thalassaemia.

TFP purposely tries to carry out most of its activities in medical colleges and hospitals because in doing so Pakistan?s very much underestimated disease called Thalassaemia gets its due attention, and the accent of TFP goes into the those who matter the most ie doctors, paramedics and the future of Pakistan medicine the MBBS students who surprisingly does not know the significance and prevalence of the disease in Pakistan.

In the gigantic struggle against Thalassaemia TFP thinks that it has just warmed up for a long journey, for playing its part in making Pakistan a Thalassaemia free country.

The Mirpur Workshop

The Prenatal Diagnosis and Clinical Management of Thalassaemia workshop was scheduled to take place at DHQ Hospital Mirpur on 8th June, 2006.

It was a big day for Thalassaemia Society of Pakistan as their long awaited dream was about to materialize in shape of Thalassaemia Society of Pakistan Mirpur Branch located inside DHQ Hospital Mirpur..

There are large numbers of Thalassaemics in and around outskirts of Mirpur. Azad Kashmir does not have any center to cater for Thalassaemics and it was an established fact that people have to cross mountains and travel long distances to reach big cities of Pakistan for their Thalassaemic children to be properly treated.

Thalassaemia Society of Pakistan Mirpur Branch looked no less than a model for Thalassaemia centers in Pakistan. Prof. Dr Jovaria Mannan (President TSP) and Prof. Dr. Yaasmin Raashid (General Secretary TSP) praised the team involved in such a noble cause.

The next day of inauguration, on 8th June, 2006 Thalassaemia Federation of Pakistan started its workshop on Prenatal Diagnosis and Clinical Management of Thalassaemia. Mirpur community really showed their enthusiasm by coming out in numbers. It was really the first time that Mirpur?s Doctors, Paramedics, Thalassaemia patients and parents were told and trained about the formidable disease and its proper management.

It is believed that TFP?s workshop would prove to be a stepping stone and would go a long way in proper handling and treatment of Thalassaemics of not only Mirpur but whole of Kashmir.

TFP owes its gratitude to every one involved in building Thalassaemia center in Mirpur and would urge other societies of Pakistan to reach far flung areas.

International Conference

10th Int. Conference on Thal. and Haemoglobinopathies & 12th Int.TIF Conf. for Thal. Patients and Parents
from 07/01/2006 to 10/01/2006 at Dubai World Trade Center, UAE

Thalassaemia Federation of Pakistan (TFP) being a nascent organization has achieved a lot since it came into existence in June 2004 with the help of Thalassaemia International organization. TFP strives to motivate and support Thalassaemia Associations, acting as a uniting force in the struggle against Thalassaemia in Pakistan. To date TFP has over 33 member Thalassaemia societies. Under the leadership of TFP president Gen (R) Moin-Ud-Din Haider, General Secretary Prof. Dr. Yasmin Raashid, TFP?s Medical Advisory Board Chairperson Dr. Jovaria Mannan and all of its executive board members TFP has achieved a lot more than its core objective. The scope of work of TFP is getting bigger and more challenging which puts a huge amount responsibility on TFP.  TFP is an organization that was able to come out big against all odds.

To date, TFP has organized four National Conferences on Thalassaemia which were held in Islamabad (Federal Capital of Pakistan), Karachi (Provincial Capital of Sindh), Peshawar (Provincial Capital of NWFP) and Lahore respectively. TFP has also conducted nine workshops at various regions of Pakistan providing hands on experience to the doctors and paramedics, ensuring proper and up-to-date treatment for the people suffering from Thalassaemia in Pakistan. Uptil now TFP has been able to organize 9 Executive Committee Meetings.

It has played a pivotal role in improving treatment protocol to ensure optimal treatment and prevention for Thalassaemia in Pakistan. The treatment protocol is made by TFP Medical advisory board and it is believed it would have aground breaking results. The protocol will not only foster up-to-date information on Thalassaemia to all health workers in Pakistan but it would also help a great deal to the patients and parents of Thalassaemia in understanding the formidable disease. TFP owes its gratitude to Prof. Dr. Jovaria Mannan chairperson Medial Advisory Board of TFP who has worked zealously for the preparation of the protocol.

Currently, TFP aims to work for the National Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Thalassaemia in Pakistan. The objective of the program is not only to provide counseling, prenatal diagnosis and target screening of Thalassaemia, but also to disseminate information to foster an awareness of the condition nationwide.

The latest activity of TFP include 4th  National Thalassaemia Conference and workshops at Lahore held from 27-28 April 2007, Prenatal Diagnosis and Clinical Management of Thalassaemia workshops at Mirpur , Abbottabad and Lahore General Hospital held on 8th June, 2006 , 23rd September, 2006 and January 17, 2007 respectively.

 3rd International Conference on Thalassaemia

The Thalassaemia Federation of Pakistan attended the 3rd International Conference on Thalassaemia which was held at New Delhi from the 5th to the 7th of November, 2004. A delegation of 36 members- consisting of patients, parents, doctors and social workers from numerous associations attended the conference. This was the first international event that the various societies attended under the united umbrella of the Federation. Our reception in India was a very memorable one. As a collective effort, this conference gave the Federation the opportunity to reach out to people from a uniform platform, and our efforts were appreciated. This was the Federation’s first experience on foreign soil and there was ample indication that, in time, the Federation will have the potential to reach out to thousands and would felicitate fight against Thalassaemia.

The Federation represented Pakistan during the night festivities which our hosts had so generously planned for us. The informal gatherings allowed us an opportunity to discuss Thalassaemia on a personal level and many fruitful discussions were initiated between the federation and our hosts. We hope that in the future our discussions materialize into a significant concept that helps us eradicate Thalassaemia. The president of Thalassaemics India initiated the concept of a united effort between India and Pakistan to fight the various manifestations of Thalassaemia. The social and psychological concerns that patients and parents face in Pakistan are strikingly similar to those faced in India. This commonality could mean that is we unite our forces and efforts; our outreach and affectability would be enhanced.

One our most unforgettable experience was our visit to Faridabad. From the moment we stepped out of our cars, our hosts never let us forget, for even a minute, the genuine warmth and affection which they felt towards us. Our welcome was royal indeed and the whole town had turned out to welcome us into their homes. Every member of the federation thoroughly reciprocated the affection and we had a ball of a time.

The Thalassaemic children of Faridabad had prepared numerous works of art which we were invited to judge and they later mesmerized us with their dancing talents. We were literally flowered with their affections and every member of the federation reciprocated the feeling with equal warmth. Faridabad saw the federation participating in the traditional dances and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day. The children from across the border had an opportunity to mingle and talk and the parents were given an opportunity to discuss the various issues with their counterparts from across the border.

The trip to India marked the first experience for the federation in terms of the expose which we were subjected to. It gave us an inkling of the potential of a uniform platform which the federation has in helping curb Thalassaemia. We look forward to embarking on nume
